Värähtelymoodit, or "vibration modes," refer to the characteristic patterns of oscillation that occur in physical systems such as strings, membranes, or acoustic cavities. These modes describe how energy is distributed within a vibrating object, influencing its sound production and resonance properties. In musical instruments, for example, the vibrating strings or air columns within wind instruments exhibit distinct vibration modes that determine the instrument’s timbre and tonal quality.

In a string fixed at both ends, such as those in a guitar or piano, the fundamental mode represents the simplest vibration pattern, where the string oscillates as a single loop. Higher-order modes, or harmonics, involve additional loops, creating more complex waveforms. Each mode corresponds to a specific frequency, with the fundamental frequency being the lowest and subsequent modes being integer multiples of it. Similarly, in acoustic cavities like organ pipes or musical bowls, standing waves form within the enclosed space.
