Väliskõrvainfektsioon, commonly known as swimmer's ear, is an inflammation or infection of the outer ear canal. This condition most frequently arises when water remains in the ear canal after swimming or bathing, creating a moist environment conducive to bacterial or fungal growth. The prolonged presence of moisture can irritate the delicate skin lining the ear canal, making it susceptible to infection.

Symptoms of väliskõrvainfektsioon typically include itching and discomfort in the ear, followed by pain that can become severe, especially when the ear is touched or pulled. The ear canal may appear red and swollen, and there might be discharge that can be clear, white, yellow, or even greenish. Hearing loss can also occur, particularly if the ear canal becomes significantly swollen or filled with debris.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination of the ear canal. Treatment for väliskõrvainfektsioon primarily involves keeping the ear dry and using prescribed ear drops. These drops often contain a combination of antibiotics or antifungals to combat the infection and may also include corticosteroids to reduce inflammation. In cases of severe swelling, a small wick may be inserted into the ear canal to help deliver the medication more effectively. Prevention strategies include thoroughly drying the ears after swimming, using earplugs when swimming, and avoiding the insertion of foreign objects into the ear canal.
