Utgångssymbolen, in Swedish usage often referring to the emergency exit pictogram, is the standardized sign used to indicate the location of the nearest exit in buildings and public spaces. It typically shows a stylized human figure moving toward an opening door, sometimes accompanied by an arrow directing the exit path. The sign is designed for rapid recognition in emergencies and is widely used in safety signage and wayfinding.

Design and standards often define the symbol through ISO 7010, which specifies international graphical safety signs. The conventional form is a white running figure on a green background, with an optional arrow to indicate direction. Signs may be mounted above doors, along corridors, or at decision points, and can be textless or include the word for exit in the local language.

Color and visibility are key features: the green background signals safety and escape, while the white figure provides high contrast. Signs are produced to be durable and are frequently manufactured with photoluminescent or self-luminous materials to stay visible during power outages and in low light.

Regional variants exist, as some countries use different sign conventions or accompanying text (for example, “UTGÅNG” in Swedish contexts). Nevertheless, the core purpose remains the same: to provide a clear, quickly understood cue to the closest escape route, reducing confusion and aiding safe evacuation during emergencies.
