Uriinikateeterid

Uriinikateeterid, often referred to as urinary catheters, are medical devices used to drain urine from the bladder. They are typically made of flexible materials such as latex, silicone, or polyurethane. A catheter is inserted through the urethra and into the bladder, allowing urine to flow out through a tube and into a collection bag.

There are several types of urinary catheters, each serving different purposes and durations of use. Indwelling catheters, also known as Foley catheters, are left in place for extended periods, often weeks or months, and are secured in the bladder by a small balloon. Intermittent catheters are designed for single use and are removed immediately after the bladder is emptied. External catheters, often called condom catheters, are worn on the outside of the body and are typically used by men.

Urinary catheters are prescribed for a variety of medical reasons. These include urinary retention, where the bladder cannot be emptied naturally, surgical procedures, incontinence management, and for obtaining sterile urine samples. They can also be used to monitor urine output in critically ill patients.

While generally safe, the use of urinary catheters carries some risks. The most common complication is infection, particularly urinary tract infections (UTIs). Other potential issues include bladder spasms, urethral irritation or injury, and leakage. Proper insertion techniques, sterile procedures, and regular catheter care are crucial to minimize these risks. Healthcare professionals determine the appropriate type and duration of catheterization based on the individual patient's needs and medical condition.
