Untertasse

An untertasse, commonly known in English as a saucer, is a small, shallow dish typically paired with a cup or mug. Its primary function is to serve as a coaster, placed beneath the drinkware to protect table surfaces from heat, condensation, or spills. By catching drips that may occur during handling or sipping, the untertasse helps maintain cleanliness and prevents damage to tablecloths or furniture.

Historically, the untertasse has been an essential component of tea and coffee services, usually crafted from materials such as porcelain, ceramic, glass, or earthenware. In fine dining, saucers are often part of a matching set designed to complement the aesthetic of the teapot and cups. While predominantly functional, they also serve a decorative role, frequently featuring patterns, gilded edges, or brand logos, particularly in commercial settings.
