Unterbrecherkontakt

Unterbrecherkontakt is a German term that translates to "interrupter contact" or "breaker contact." It refers to a type of electrical switch designed to make and break a circuit repeatedly at high speed. These contacts are typically found in older ignition systems of internal combustion engines, specifically in a component called the breaker points or contact breaker.

The primary function of the unterbrecherkontakt in an engine's ignition system is to control the flow of current to the ignition coil. When the engine is running, a cam on the distributor shaft rotates. As the cam rotates, it pushes against a lever arm that holds the unterbrecherkontakt. When the lever arm is pushed away from the stationary contact, the circuit is opened, interrupting the current flow to the ignition coil. This interruption causes a high voltage to be induced in the coil, which is then sent to the spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture.

The timing of this interruption is crucial for engine performance. The unterbrecherkontakt opens at precisely the right moment in the engine cycle to generate a spark. Wear and tear on the unterbrecherkontakt, such as pitting or burning of the contact surfaces, can lead to misfires, poor engine performance, and difficulty starting. Regular maintenance, including cleaning and adjustment of the gap between the contacts, is necessary for proper operation. In modern vehicles, breaker points have largely been replaced by electronic ignition systems, which offer greater reliability and precision.
