Université, in the French-language education system, refers to a higher education institution that offers undergraduate and graduate programs and conducts research. Universités may be public or private and are typically organized into faculties or schools spanning disciplines such as sciences, humanities, engineering, and medicine.

Origins trace to medieval Europe, with early universities emerging in the 12th to 14th centuries in places like Bologna, Paris, and Oxford. They developed as communities of scholars granted licenses to teach, establishing curricula, degree structures, and norms that influenced higher education across the world.

Most universités are structured into faculties or departments. Governance typically includes an executive leader (rector or president), an academic senate or council, and a board of governors. They set admissions policies, oversee faculty appointments, manage budgets, and coordinate research and campus services.

Curricula lead to degrees such as bachelor’s degrees (licence or equivalent in some systems), master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees. Professional programs, including medicine, engineering, and law, may be offered separately and are often subject to external accreditation.
