Underbegrepp

Underbegrepp is a term used in Swedish educational theory and information organization to describe a concept that is subordinate to a more general concept, known as överbegrepp. An underbegrepp sits within a hierarchical structure of knowledge, where broader categories are divided into more specific instances or subcategories. In linguistics and information science, this relationship is often described as hyponymy, with underbegrepp corresponding to the hyponyms of their överbegrepp (hypernyms).

The concept is commonly used to plan teaching, learning goals, and knowledge maps. By identifying an överbegrepp and listing its possible underbegrepp, educators can structure curricula to move from general principles to detailed examples, helping students build coherent mental models. In knowledge representation, underbegrepp support taxonomy and thesauri by clarifying how ideas relate and differ.
