UXOrelated

UXOrelated is a term used to describe issues arising from unexploded ordnance and related munitions that remain dangerous long after conflicts end. It encompasses hazard identification, risk assessment, clearance and disposal, policy development, and public safety programs aimed at reducing civilian exposure to UXO.

Unexploded ordnance includes bombs, artillery shells, landmines, cluster munitions, grenades, fuzes, and discarded explosive remnants. These objects may be found on former battlefields, in former military training grounds, or in areas where debris, construction, or natural processes have relocated or exposed them.

The hazards of UXO include severe injuries or fatalities from detonation, as well as longer-term impacts on health, livelihoods, agriculture, and community development. UXO can render land unusable, hinder infrastructure projects, and complicate humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts.

Key elements include mine-action standards such as the International Mine Action Standards (IMAS), and governance by organizations such as UNMAS, HALO Trust, MAG, and ICRC, in conjunction with national authorities and safety regulations.

UXO-related challenges are global, with legacy hazards in post-conflict regions across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The work supports safe access to land, agricultural development, urban renewal, and humanitarian operations, though funding, political instability, and data gaps can impede progress.
