UVvastupidavus refers to the resistance of a material to damage or degradation caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation, a component of sunlight, carries enough energy to break chemical bonds within many substances, leading to changes in their physical and chemical properties. This degradation can manifest in various ways, such as discoloration, embrittlement, loss of strength, and cracking.

Many common materials are susceptible to UV damage. For instance, plastics can become brittle and yellow over time when exposed to sunlight. Paints and coatings may fade or chalk, losing their protective qualities. Natural materials like wood can also be affected, leading to surface erosion and discoloration. Textiles can lose their color vibrancy and structural integrity.

To combat UV degradation, various strategies are employed. Many materials are formulated with UV stabilizers, which are chemical additives that absorb or reflect UV radiation, thus protecting the bulk material. Protective coatings, such as varnishes or UV-resistant films, can be applied to surfaces to act as a barrier. Designing products with materials inherently resistant to UV radiation is another approach. The degree of UV resistance is a critical factor in determining the lifespan and performance of products intended for outdoor use or prolonged exposure to sunlight. Testing for UV resistance is often conducted under accelerated aging conditions to simulate long-term exposure.
