UVvalgus

UVvalgus is a rare congenital or acquired condition characterized by abnormal swelling and distortion of the uvula, the muscular extension that hangs from the soft palate in the back of the throat. The term "UVvalgus" is derived from "uvula" and the Latin "valgus," meaning bent outward or distorted.

The condition can be congenital, resulting from developmental anomalies during embryogenesis, or acquired, often due to trauma, infections, or inflammatory processes affecting the uvula and surrounding tissues. Patients with UVvalgus may present with symptoms such as a visibly elongated or asymmetric uvula, a sensation of a foreign body in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or sleep disturbances like snoring or obstructive sleep apnea.

Diagnosis is primarily clinical, based on visual examination during an oral cavity assessment. Imaging studies are generally not required but can be utilized in atypical or complex cases to rule out other oropharyngeal anomalies.

Treatment options depend on the severity and underlying cause. Mild cases may not require intervention, while symptomatic or significantly deforming UVvalgus can be managed through surgical procedures such as uvulectomy or laser excision. These procedures aim to restore normal uvula anatomy and improve associated symptoms.

Though considered rare, UVvalgus is generally benign. Awareness among clinicians facilitates proper diagnosis and management, helping alleviate discomfort and prevent potential airway or sleep-related complications.
