UTMjärjestelmä

The UTMjärjestelmä, which translates to UTM System in English, refers to the Universal Transverse Mercator system. This is a coordinate system used to map the Earth's surface by dividing it into 60 zones. Each zone is 6 degrees of longitude wide. The UTM system projects the Earth onto a cylinder, which is then unrolled into a flat map. This projection is particularly useful for mapping areas near the equator, but it does have distortions, especially at higher latitudes.

Within each UTM zone, locations are identified by a grid system. This grid uses easting and northing coordinates. Easting refers to the distance east of a central meridian for that zone, and northing refers to the distance north of the equator. The origin for the northing coordinate is shifted to avoid negative numbers in the Southern Hemisphere. The UTM system provides a standardized way to represent locations and is widely used in surveying, cartography, and military applications. Its zone-based approach allows for relatively accurate measurements over short distances within each zone, making it a practical tool for navigation and mapping.
