In performance, technology plays a crucial role through amplification systems, electronic instruments, digital effects processors, and stage lighting. Live looping, MIDI controllers, and projection mapping are also common elements in contemporary live music.

The distribution of music has been transformed by digital technologies, from the CD to online streaming services, changing how audiences access and consume music. Music technology continues to be a dynamic area, with ongoing research and development in areas like artificial intelligence for music generation and immersive audio experiences.
