Tændingsrækkefølge refers to the specific order in which the spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders of an internal combustion engine. This sequence is crucial for the smooth and efficient operation of the engine. The firing order is determined by the engine's design, particularly the crankshaft and camshaft configurations.

Different engine configurations have unique tændingsrækkefølger. For example, a common inline four-cylinder engine often has a tændingsrækkefølge of 1-3-4-2. In this case, cylinder number 1 fires, followed by cylinder 3, then cylinder 4, and finally cylinder 2. Inline six-cylinder engines might have a tændingsrækkefølge such as 1-5-3-6-2-4.

V-engine configurations, like V6 or V8 engines, have two banks of cylinders, and their tændingsrækkefølger are designed to balance the forces and vibrations produced by the firing of each cylinder. A typical V8 engine might have a tændingsrækkefølge of 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2. The numbering of cylinders usually starts from the front of the engine, with specific conventions for left and right banks.
