Täyspuulla

Täyspuulla is a Finnish term used to describe products made entirely from solid wood, meaning without layers of plywood, particleboard, or other engineered cores. The expression translates roughly as “with solid wood” and is commonly found in furniture, flooring, cabinetry, and other joinery descriptions in Finland and other Nordic markets.

Characteristics of täyspuulla include a uniform material through the thickness and visible natural grain. Solid wood is durable, repairable, and can be refinished several times. It is, however, sensitive to moisture and temperature changes: wood expands and contracts with humidity and can warp, cup, or crack if it is not properly dried, acclimated, and sealed. Kiln-drying and appropriate sealing help mitigate these issues, but environmental conditions remain a key consideration.

Common applications are furniture such as tables and chairs, cabinetry and shelving, solid-wood flooring, doors and window frames, and certain musical instruments. In construction, solid timber is used where strength and longevity are desired, though cost and dimensional stability lead many projects to use engineered alternatives for specific components.

Sustainability and economics are important factors: täyspuulla products are typically more expensive per unit than engineered woods, but they can offer a longer service life and the possibility of refinishing rather than replacement. Responsible sourcing, often indicated by certifications such as FSC or PEFC, is frequently emphasized in marketing. Proper storage, humidity control, and routine maintenance extend the life of solid wood products.
