Tähystystoimenpiteitä, or endoscopic procedures, are medical examinations that use a flexible or rigid tube with a camera attached to visualize the interior of a body cavity or organ. These procedures are minimally invasive and allow doctors to diagnose and sometimes treat a variety of conditions. The endoscope, a thin, flexible tube, is inserted into the body, and the camera transmits images to a monitor, enabling the physician to see internal structures.

Common types of tähystystoimenpiteitä include gastroscopy, which examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum; colonoscopy, which visualizes the large intestine; bronchoscopy, used for the airways; and cystoscopy, for the bladder. Depending on the area being examined, the endoscope is typically inserted through a natural opening like the mouth, anus, or urethra, or through a small incision.

During an endoscopic procedure, tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken for further laboratory analysis. This helps in detecting abnormalities such as inflammation, ulcers, polyps, and cancerous or precancerous cells. In addition to diagnosis, some endoscopic procedures allow for therapeutic interventions. For instance, polyps can be removed, bleeding can be stopped, or narrowed passages can be dilated.

Patients are usually sedated or given anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure. After the examination, most patients can resume their normal activities relatively quickly, although some may experience minor discomfort.
