Távhálózattározás, also known as district heating storage, refers to the practice of storing thermal energy generated by district heating systems. This storage is crucial for balancing the supply and demand of heat, especially in systems that utilize intermittent or variable heat sources, such as renewable energy or waste heat.

The primary purpose of távhálózattározás is to capture excess heat produced during periods of low demand and release it when demand is high. This allows district heating plants to operate more efficiently, potentially reducing the need for peak-load boilers that are often less efficient and more polluting. It also enables greater integration of renewable energy sources, as the heat generated by solar thermal or geothermal plants can be stored for use during periods when these sources are not actively producing.

Various technologies are employed for thermal energy storage in district heating. The most common is thermal stratification in large water tanks. These tanks are designed to maintain layers of water at different temperatures, with hotter water stored at the top and cooler water at the bottom. Other methods include underground thermal energy storage (UTES) in aquifers or artificial caverns, and phase change materials (PCMs) that store and release heat during their phase transitions.
