Työnjohtajan

Työnjohtaja is a Finnish term for a frontline supervisor or foreman who directs and coordinates day-to-day work on a construction site, in manufacturing, or in other industrial settings. The word means 'work leader' and the role is typically the link between skilled workers and higher management. In English, it is often translated as foreman, site supervisor, or production supervisor. The role of a työnjohtaja is to ensure that tasks are planned, executed, and completed safely, on time, and to required quality.

In construction and industrial environments, duties include planning the work schedule, assigning tasks to crews, coordinating resources, monitoring progress, and adjusting plans as needed. They supervise workers, troubleshoot problems, enforce safety and quality standards, and report progress to site management. They also liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients and maintain documentation.

Qualifications vary by sector but commonly include vocational or technical education related to the field and substantial hands-on experience. Supervisory training and safety certification are often required; in Finland, workers who supervise on site typically hold a Työturvallisuuskortti (occupational safety card) and may pursue further management training.

The role is usually filled by experienced tradespeople who possess leadership, communication, and organizational skills. In manufacturing or service contexts, the position can be titled differently, such as production supervisor or team lead, but the core responsibility remains directing everyday work and ensuring safe, efficient operations.
