Työmuodostelmateoria, known in English as work formation theory, is a theoretical framework in sociology and economics that explains how new work roles and organizational structures emerge and evolve. It focuses on the dynamic processes that lead to the creation of jobs, tasks, and the associated skills and knowledge required to perform them. The theory posits that work is not static but rather a continuously constructed and reconstructed phenomenon, shaped by technological advancements, market demands, organizational strategies, and the actions of individuals and groups within the workplace.

Central to the theory is the idea that work formation is an ongoing process driven by innovation, adaptation, and negotiation. New technologies, for instance, can render existing tasks obsolete while simultaneously creating new ones, demanding novel skill sets. Similarly, changes in consumer preferences or competitive pressures can compel organizations to restructure their operations, leading to the formation of new departments, roles, or even entirely new industries. The theory also emphasizes the role of individuals and collective action in shaping work.
