Tyyny

Tyyny is the Finnish word for a pillow, a soft bag used to support the head during sleep or to provide comfort while sitting. In Finnish households, the term covers both sleeping pillows and decorative cushions; the pillow case is called tyynynpäällinen.

Fillings vary widely, including down or feathers, synthetic microfiber, memory foam, buckwheat hulls, and other materials. Covers are typically made from cotton, linen, or synthetic fabrics. Common sizes range from standard sleeping pillows to specialized shapes for neck support, as well as a variety of decorative cushions for living spaces.

Care depends on the fill. Many pillows with removable covers can be machine washed and dried on low heat, while down pillows may require gentle washing and thorough drying to prevent odor or clumping. Foam and other solid fillings may be spot-cleaned or replaced when lost shape. Using a pillow protector helps extend life and reduce allergies.

Ergonomics and health: a properly chosen pillow supports the neck and spine alignment and can reduce sleep discomfort. People with allergies may prefer hypoallergenic fills and dust-m mite barriers. Pillows typically need replacement every few years as they lose loft and support.
