Tympanoplastikk

Tympanoplastikk is a surgical procedure aimed at reconstructing the eardrum, also known as the tympanic membrane, and often the ossicles of the middle ear. The primary goal is to restore hearing and prevent recurrent ear infections. This surgery is typically performed when there is a perforation in the eardrum, which can be caused by chronic infections, trauma, or congenital defects.

The procedure involves several steps. First, the surgeon carefully examines the middle ear to assess the extent of the damage. Then, a graft is used to cover the perforation. This graft material can be taken from the patient's own body, such as from behind the ear or from the temporalis fascia muscle. In some cases, synthetic materials may be used. The graft is then carefully positioned to seal the hole in the eardrum. If the ossicles, the small bones in the middle ear responsible for transmitting sound vibrations, are also damaged or missing, they may be repaired or replaced during the same procedure.

The success of tympanoplastikk depends on various factors, including the size and location of the perforation, the health of the middle ear, and the surgeon's skill. While the surgery can significantly improve hearing and prevent water from entering the middle ear, complete hearing restoration is not always achieved. Post-operative care is crucial, involving careful attention to wound healing and regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress. Complications are rare but can include infection, graft failure, or persistent hearing loss.
