Tverrnasjonalt

Tverrnasjonalt is an adjective used to describe activities, organizations, or processes that involve or connect more than one nation and transcend national borders. In Norwegian usage it emphasizes cross-border interactions and cooperation that operate beyond a single country, rather than merely bilateral relations between two states. The term is closely related to transnasjonal and transnasjonalitet in academic literature and is often contrasted with internasjonal (international) and multinasjonal (multinational), to signal cross-border networks, shared norms, and joint objectives across multiple countries.

The concept appears across several fields. In politics and governance, tverrnasjonalt refers to governance networks, policy projects, and legal regimes that span several states. In business and economics, it describes cross-border value chains, research collaborations, and innovation initiatives that involve actors from multiple nations. In migration studies and cultural sociology, it is used to describe transnational social fields, such as families, labor mobility, and cultural exchange that maintain ties across borders.

Examples include cross-border programs within the European Union, global or regional NGOs operating in several countries, and international scientific collaborations. The term can be context-dependent and may overlap with international or global terminology; its precise meaning depends on which actors and borders are being highlighted and the scale of the cross-border connection.
