Tussikirjoitusvälineet, commonly known as markers, are writing and drawing instruments that feature a porous applicator or nib, typically made of felt or fiber, saturated with ink. The ink flows through the nib via capillary action, allowing for the transfer of ink to a surface. Markers are used for a wide range of purposes, including writing, drawing, coloring, and marking.

The earliest form of the marker is believed to have originated in the 19th century, with further development in the 20th century leading to the modern marker. Today, a diverse array of markers exists, distinguished by their tip size and shape, ink type, and intended application. Common tip types include fine tips for detailed work, broad tips for bold lines and coloring, and chisel tips which offer both fine and broad strokes depending on the angle of use.

Marker inks vary significantly. Water-based inks are generally non-toxic and quick-drying, often used in markers for children or for general art and craft projects. Alcohol-based inks are known for their vibrant colors, smooth blending capabilities, and permanence, making them popular among artists and illustrators. Permanent markers, often using solvent-based inks, are designed to write on a variety of surfaces and resist fading or washing off. Speciality markers exist for specific tasks, such as fabric markers, whiteboard markers that can be easily erased, and permanent industrial markers. The development of different ink formulations and nib materials continues to expand the capabilities and applications of these versatile writing tools.
