Turvavelvoitteet, or safety belts in Finnish, are essential components of vehicle safety systems designed to protect occupants during collisions or sudden stops. Widely used in cars, trucks, and other motor vehicles, they work by restraining passengers and preventing them from being ejected or thrown against hard surfaces inside the vehicle. The primary types include lap belts, which wrap around the hips, and shoulder belts, which secure the torso and head. Modern vehicles often feature three-point belts, combining both lap and shoulder restraints for enhanced safety.

The effectiveness of turvavelvoitteet is supported by extensive research and crash-test data, demonstrating a significant reduction in severe injuries and fatalities.
