Turvataset

Turvataset is a term used in information security and risk management to describe a structured collection of data assembled to support safety, security, and resilience research and operations. The word combines turva, the Finnish word for safety or security, with dataset, and is used in some regional contexts to refer to security-oriented data collections.

Contents and structure of a turvataset vary, but it typically aggregates records that facilitate threat analysis, vulnerability assessment, and protective testing. Common elements include security incident reports, indicators of compromise, vulnerability data, asset inventories, and telemetry from networks, endpoints, or sensors. Depending on its purpose, a turvataset may contain labeled data for supervised learning (such as incident categories, attack types, and outcomes) and unlabeled data for anomaly detection. Data formats are often CSV, JSON, or relational tables, with fields such as timestamp, source, destination, event_type, and severity.

Sources and governance also shape turvatasets. They may be built from open public data, vendor telemetry with user consent, internal security logs, or synthetic data generated to address gaps. Privacy and legal considerations typically drive the use of anonymization, tokenization, or differential privacy, and data sharing is commonly governed by licenses or data use agreements.

Applications include security analytics, intrusion and fraud detection, risk scoring, policy testing, and training of security personnel or automated systems. Limitations involve biases, representativeness, data quality, and the balance between utility and privacy.
