Turuhin

Turuhin is a town and administrative center of Turuhin District in the fictional country of Veridia. It lies in the Veridian Highlands along the Turuhin River, roughly 60 kilometers north of Veridia City. As of the latest figures, the town has a population of about 6,200 people.

The name Turuhin is of uncertain origin; local tradition connects it to an old Veridian word meaning "meeting place" and to the river that runs through the town.

Turuhin sits on a gently rolling landscape with mixed forests and farmland. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and warm summers; annual precipitation ranges around 700 millimeters.

Turuhin appears in regional records from the late 17th century as a seasonal trading post. It grew through the 18th and 19th centuries with agriculture and timber economies and acquired municipal rights in the early 1800s. The arrival of the railway in 1895 linked Turuhin to distant markets.

The local economy centers on forestry, agriculture, and light manufacturing. Key facilities include a sawmill, a dairy cooperative, and several crafts workshops. Turuhin is connected by a regional highway network and by regular bus services to neighboring towns; the town has a river port but no commercial airport.

The population is predominantly Veridian-speaking, with small minority communities. The town hosts Turuhin Days, a summer festival featuring folk music, market crafts, and rural cuisine. Traditional crafts such as wood carving and pottery are still practiced.

Notable residents and associated figures include the botanist Leik Taran and the writer Mira Kest, who both lived in Turuhin during the 20th century.
