TurkStat

TurkStat, officially known as the Turkish Statistical Institute, is the national statistical agency of Turkey. It is responsible for producing official statistics on the country’s population, economy, society and environment, and for coordinating the statistical system. The institute designs surveys and censuses, collects data from households and businesses, and disseminates results to policymakers, researchers, and the public to support evidence-based decision making.

Its core activities include the preparation of population and housing censuses; compilation of national accounts, price indices, and inflation measures; labor market statistics; trade and industry data; agriculture, health, education, and social indicators. TurkStat develops statistical methods, metadata, and quality standards, and publishes data in regular releases, annual reports, and statistical yearbooks. Data collection emphasizes confidentiality and methodological transparency.

TurkStat operates as a government agency within the Turkish statistical system. It is led by a president and supported by specialized directorates responsible for different domains. The institute follows international statistical standards and guidelines and collaborates with national and international partners to harmonize methods and classifications.

Statistics are published on TurkStat’s website and through an open data portal, with accompanying methodology notes and metadata. Users can access broad aggregates freely; microdata requests are governed by confidentiality rules and may require formal approval.

TurkStat participates in international statistical programs and collaborates with organizations such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development to align Turkish statistics with global standards and best practices.
