Turbokompresoriai, or turbochargers, are mechanical devices used to increase the power output of internal combustion engines by forcing more air into the combustion chamber. This process, known as forced induction, allows the engine to burn more fuel and produce greater power without significantly increasing engine displacement. Turbochargers are commonly found in both automotive and industrial applications, including passenger cars, trucks, motorcycles, and stationary engines.

A turbocharger consists of two main components: a turbine and a compressor, connected by a common shaft. The turbine is driven by exhaust gases exiting the engine, while the compressor forces additional air into the engine’s intake manifold. This extra air enables the engine to burn more fuel, increasing power while maintaining efficiency. The efficiency of a turbocharger depends on factors such as turbine design, compressor mapping, and wastegate control, which regulates boost pressure to prevent engine damage.

In modern automotive engineering, turbochargers are widely adopted due to their ability to improve fuel economy and performance. They are particularly common in diesel engines, where they enhance torque at lower RPMs, but are also used in gasoline engines to achieve higher power outputs. However, improper use or maintenance of turbochargers can lead to issues such as overheating, lag (a delay in power delivery), or turbo failure, which may result from carbon buildup, oil contamination, or excessive boost pressure.

Regular maintenance, including oil changes with high-quality lubricants and periodic inspections, is essential to prolong the lifespan of a turbocharger. Proper cooling systems and intake/exhaust modifications may also be necessary to optimize performance and reliability. Turbochargers remain a key technology in the evolution of internal combustion engines, balancing power, efficiency, and environmental considerations.
