First, fixed costs, such as rent for a factory or the cost of machinery, are spread over a larger number of units, reducing the fixed cost per unit. Second, as production volumes increase, companies can often negotiate better prices for raw materials due to bulk purchasing. Furthermore, specialized labor and machinery can be utilized more efficiently, leading to increased productivity and lower labor costs per unit.

These production benefits are a key driver of business growth and competitive advantage. Companies that can achieve significant economies of scale can offer their products at lower prices, making them more attractive to consumers and potentially driving competitors out of the market. In some industries, such as manufacturing or software development, the initial investment in infrastructure and research and development is very high, making large-scale production essential for profitability. However, there are also limits to production benefits. Eventually, a company may encounter diseconomies of scale, where costs begin to rise again due to challenges in management, coordination, and communication as the organization becomes too large and complex.
