Tundmishäired

Tundmishäired, also known as sensory processing disorder (SPD), is a neurological condition where the brain has trouble receiving and responding to information that comes through the senses. Individuals with tundmishäired may be overly sensitive to sensory input, such as sounds, lights, textures, or tastes, or they may not respond to sensory input enough. This can lead to challenges in daily life, affecting a person's ability to function at school, work, and in social situations.

The senses involved include sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, movement (vestibular sense), and body awareness (proprioception). For example, someone with hypersensitivity to sound might find loud noises unbearable, while someone with hyposensitivity might seek out intense sensory experiences. Difficulties can manifest as problems with fine motor skills, gross motor skills, attention, emotional regulation, and social interaction.

Tundmishäired is not an intellectual disability, though it can co-occur with other conditions like autism spectrum disorder or ADHD. The exact causes of tundmishäired are not fully understood, but it is thought to involve differences in how the brain processes sensory signals. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough evaluation by an occupational therapist or other qualified professional. Treatment often involves occupational therapy, which helps individuals develop strategies to manage sensory input and improve their ability to participate in everyday activities. The goal is not to "cure" tundmishäired, but to help individuals develop coping mechanisms and create an environment that better supports their sensory needs.
