Tulolämmitys

Tulolämmitys, also known as underfloor heating, is a heating system that distributes heat from below a floor surface. It is a common and efficient method of heating buildings, particularly in colder climates. The system typically involves heating elements, such as electric cables or pipes carrying hot water, installed beneath the floor.

There are two main types of tulolämmitys: electric and water-based. Electric systems use resistive heating cables embedded in the floor, which are powered by electricity. These are often used for smaller areas or for supplementary heating. Water-based systems, also known as hydronic underfloor heating, circulate warm water from a boiler or heat pump through a network of pipes laid in the floor. This method is generally more energy-efficient for heating larger spaces.

The heat generated by the elements warms the floor mass, which then radiates heat upwards into the room. This provides a comfortable and even temperature distribution, as heat rises naturally. Tulolämmitys systems are often installed during the construction or renovation of a building, with the heating elements integrated into the subfloor before the final floor covering is laid.

Benefits of tulolämmitys include consistent and comfortable warmth, improved energy efficiency compared to some other heating methods, and a more aesthetically pleasing environment due to the absence of visible radiators. The system also offers advantages in terms of acoustics and air quality, as it does not circulate dust and allergens as much as forced-air systems. However, installation can be more complex and costly than traditional heating methods, and repairs may require accessing the floor structure.
