Tullias

Tullias were a family of patrician plebeian officials in ancient Rome. The Tullii family rose to prominence in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE, with several members holding elected office.

The most famous member of the Tullii family was Gaius Licinius Calvus Iulius Antistius Tullianus, who served as a plebeian tribune in 427 BCE. However, it was his nephew, Licinius Calvus, who gained more widespread recognition. Licinius Calvus served as a praetor and quaternion, or leader of a group of four men, in the early 4th century BCE.

The Tullii family was known for their dedication to the cult of the dead, as well as their contributions to Roman law. One of the family members, Manlio Vulso, served as a quaestor, or supervisor of finances, and helped establish regulations for Roman estate management.

During the late republic period, Tulliana women were often prominent figures in politics, particularly in the 1st century BCE. Several of these women played a significant role in Roman society, including Tertia Annia, a respected orator, and a devotee of the cult of her husband.

Another prominent figure in the Tullii family was Tercius, a skilled military strategist, who served as a high-ranking officer, known as a Tribune, under the renowned Roman General, Lucilius. As part of his duties, he was also advisor on civic, or property matters, to Gaius Plancius.

Overall, the provenance and social stature of members of the Tullii family highlight the social dynamic significance of Roman families under ancient governance.
