Trådhegn

Trådhegn, literally “wire fence,” refers to a fence constructed from one or more strands of wire stretched between posts. It is commonly used for boundary demarcation, livestock containment, and simple security on farms, in rural areas, and around properties. Variants include plain wire fences, barbed wire fences, and electric fencing, sometimes combined with other fencing types for added deterrence or containment.

Common components are posts (wood, metal, or concrete), one or more wire strands, and hardware to secure and tension the wires. For electric trådhegn, insulators and a power source are added to keep the strands isolated from the posts. Tensioners or strainers help maintain proper tautness, while ties or clips secure the wires to posts.

Installation considerations include the intended use, the height and number of strands required for different animals, soil and ground conditions, and the need for corner or end posts to improve stability. For livestock, spacing between wires and the overall fence height are chosen to prevent escapes or entanglement. In security applications, higher or multiple-strand configurations, combined with appropriate alarm or lighting measures, may be employed.

Materials are typically galvanized or coated steel to resist corrosion, with stainless steel or aluminum as alternatives for longer life. Maintenance involves inspecting for sagging, rust or broken wires, tightening tensions, and replacing damaged components. Proper installation and regular upkeep extend life and effectiveness.

History and usage evolved in the 19th century with the widespread adoption of barbed wire, which significantly changed fencing practices in agriculture and land management. Today, trådhegn remains a versatile, cost-effective option for many fencing needs.
