Trådar

Trådar is the Swedish term for thread or filament. In everyday language, it refers to a thin strand of material used for sewing or binding, and more generally to any slender, flexible strand. The plural form trådar is used for multiple such strands.

In textiles, trådar are fibers spun together to form yarns and threads used in sewing, weaving, and embroidery. Common materials include natural fibers such as cotton, linen, silk, and wool, as well as synthetic fibers such as polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Thread properties such as fiber content, twist, ply, and thickness affect strength, elasticity, and handling. Spinning, dyeing, and finishing processes influence appearance and performance.

In computing, a tråd means a thread of execution within a process. Threads enable concurrent tasks by sharing a program’s resources, while executing independently. Multithreading can improve responsiveness and throughput on modern CPUs but requires careful synchronization to avoid data races. Concepts such as thread pools, synchronization primitives, and context switching are central to managing trådar in software development.

In biology, trådar or filament refers to slender structures within organisms, such as actin filaments and microtubules in the cytoskeleton, or collagen filaments in connective tissue. These filaments provide support, shape, and movement at the cellular and tissue levels.

The term is also used metaphorically to describe recurring elements in a narrative or argument, or threads of a discussion that connect different parts of a topic.
