Trädnötsallergi

Trädnötsallergi is the Swedish term for tree nut allergy. This condition involves an adverse immune system reaction to certain tree nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, cashews, pistachios, and hazelnuts. The immune system mistakenly identifies proteins in these nuts as harmful, triggering an allergic response.

Symptoms of trädnötsallergi can vary in severity and may appear rapidly after consumption, touching, or even inhaling airborne particles from tree nuts. Common reactions include hives, itching, swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction can occur, requiring immediate medical attention and the administration of epinephrine.

Diagnosis of trädnötsallergi typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and specific allergy tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests that measure IgE antibodies. Strict avoidance of all tree nuts and products containing them is the primary management strategy. Individuals with trädnötsallergi must be vigilant about reading food labels and informing others about their allergy, especially when dining out.

Cross-reactivity can be an issue, meaning someone allergic to one type of tree nut may also react to others. It is important to consult with an allergist for accurate diagnosis and a personalized management plan. While some children may outgrow certain food allergies, tree nut allergies are often lifelong.
