The term "trojaanse" is a Dutch adjective derived from "Troje," the Dutch word for Troy, the ancient city famously besieged in the Trojan War. It is most commonly encountered in the phrase "Trojaanse paard" or "Trojaans paard," which translates to "Trojan horse."

The Trojan horse is a legendary stratagem described in Greek mythology, notably in Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid. According to the myth, during the Trojan War, the Greeks, unable to breach the walls of Troy, devised a plan. They built a giant wooden horse and hid a select group of their best warriors inside. The rest of the Greek army pretended to sail away, leaving the horse as a supposed offering to Athena. The Trojans, believing the war was over and the horse a gift, brought it inside their city walls. That night, the Greek soldiers emerged from the horse, opened the city gates for the returning Greek army, and Troy was ultimately conquered.

This metaphorical meaning has been widely adopted in various contexts, most notably in computer security. A "Trojan horse" in computing is a type of malware disguised as legitimate software. It tricks users into installing and running it, after which it can perform malicious actions such as stealing data, damaging systems, or granting unauthorized access to attackers. The term "trojaanse" can also be used more broadly to describe any deceptive tactic or strategy designed to infiltrate and undermine an entity from within.
