Tribondeau

Tribondeau is a surname of French origin. In science, it is best known for its association with a key principle in radiobiology, often cited as Bergonie-Tribondeau law or Tribondeau's law.

The Bergonie-Tribondeau law describes how cellular radiosensitivity relates to differentiation and proliferative capacity. It states that radiosensitivity is directly proportional to a cell’s reproductive capacity (mitotic activity) and inversely proportional to its degree of differentiation. In practical terms, tissues composed of rapidly dividing, less differentiated cells are more radiosensitive, while mature, highly differentiated tissues are more resistant to ionizing radiation. This framework helped guide early understanding of how different tissues respond to radiation and influenced both radiotherapy planning and radiation protection concepts.

In modern radiobiology, Tribondeau’s law is viewed as a foundational guideline rather than a precise predictor. Contemporary models incorporate additional factors such as DNA repair capability, oxygenation (hypoxia), cell cycle effects, and microenvironmental conditions to explain radiosensitivity with greater nuance.
