The term is typically used to describe a family of token-based signaling methods in which information is carried by discrete transmission events, or tokens, exchanged between nodes in a network. In Transmitten theory, each token encodes a fixed payload or a pointer to a payload, with timing and sequence controlling flow control, error detection, and synchronization.

Mechanism: Devices implement a transmitter and receiver that operate in a tokenized mode; transmission occurs in short pulses, with a prearranged token schema.
