Transfuusiota

Transfuusiota, known in English as blood transfusion, is a medical procedure where blood or blood components are given to a person intravenously. This is done to replace blood lost due to surgery or injury, or to help the body replace blood cells that are not being produced adequately. Blood transfusions are a common and often life-saving medical treatment.

The process involves carefully matching the donor blood to the recipient's blood type to prevent a transfusion reaction. Blood is typically donated voluntarily by healthy individuals. The donated blood is then screened for infectious diseases and processed into various components such as red blood cells, platelets, and plasma, each serving specific therapeutic purposes.

Red blood cell transfusions are used to treat anemia, which is a condition characterized by a deficiency of red blood cells or hemoglobin. Platelet transfusions are given to patients with low platelet counts or impaired platelet function, often to prevent or stop bleeding. Plasma transfusions are used to replace missing blood proteins, such as clotting factors, in patients with bleeding disorders or severe burns.
