The Caprivi Strip, named after German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s foreign minister, Leo von Caprivi, was originally part of German South West Africa but was later ceded to Britain under the terms of the 1890 Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty. After Namibia gained independence in 1990, the region remained a point of contention due to its unique historical, cultural, and economic ties to neighboring countries, particularly Zambia and Botswana. The area is bordered by Zambia to the north and east, Botswana to the southeast, and the rest of Namibia to the south and west.

Proposals for "TransCaprivi" have occasionally surfaced in discussions about regional autonomy, economic integration, or even potential secessionist movements. Supporters of such ideas argue that the region’s proximity to Zambia and Botswana could foster greater economic cooperation, particularly in trade and infrastructure development.
