Trafiksignalstyrning refers to the control of traffic signals to manage the flow of vehicles and pedestrians at intersections. The primary goal of traffic signal control is to enhance safety, improve traffic efficiency, and reduce travel times and congestion. Various methods are employed to achieve this, ranging from simple fixed-time plans to sophisticated adaptive systems.

Fixed-time control involves pre-programmed signal timing plans that operate on a cyclical basis, regardless of real-time traffic conditions. These plans are typically developed based on historical traffic data and are often adjusted during peak hours, off-peak hours, and weekends. While straightforward to implement, fixed-time systems can be inefficient when traffic patterns deviate significantly from the historical data.

Actuated control systems, on the other hand, use detectors to sense the presence of vehicles or pedestrians. These detectors can trigger changes in signal timing, extending green phases for approaching vehicles or shortening them when no demand is present. This makes actuated systems more responsive to actual traffic demand than fixed-time systems.

Adaptive traffic control systems represent a more advanced approach. They continuously monitor traffic conditions using a network of detectors and sophisticated algorithms to adjust signal timings in real-time across multiple intersections. These systems aim to optimize traffic flow over a wider area, reducing delays and improving overall network performance. They can respond dynamically to incidents, special events, and fluctuating traffic volumes.

In addition to vehicle control, traffic signal systems also incorporate pedestrian signals, often referred to as pedestrian phases or walk signals, to ensure safe crossing times. The design and implementation of traffic signal control strategies are crucial components of modern transportation engineering.
