Torsorotatie is a term used in Dutch biomechanics to describe the rotation of the torso around the vertical axis through the spine, relative to the pelvis. It is essentially axial rotation of the trunk and is often analyzed in sports science, physical therapy, and ergonomics. The term is not always standardized in anatomical nomenclature, and in many contexts it is used interchangeably with trunk or torso rotation.

Biomechanics and anatomy

Torso rotation results from coordinated movement of the thoracic and lumbar spine, rib cage, and abdominal and back muscles. The pelvis may counter-rotate to stabilize the overall body position, allowing the upper body to turn while maintaining balance. Key muscle groups include the external and internal obliques, the transversus abdominis, the erector spinae, and the larger posterior chain. Limits to torsorotatie come from spinal mobility, facet joint geometry, and soft-tissue flexibility.

Measurement and assessment

Clinically, the rotation range is considered alongside trunk flexion extension and lateral bending to evaluate core mobility and rotational capacity, which are relevant for performance and injury risk. Torsorotatie is particularly relevant in sports such as golf, baseball, tennis, and rowing, where trunk rotation contributes to power generation and technique. It also matters in rehabilitation and ergonomics, where improved trunk rotation can aid functional tasks and reduce low-back strain.
