Torrhetssymtom, also known as dry eye disease, is a common condition characterized by insufficient lubrication of the eyes. This can result from either reduced tear production or excessive tear evaporation. The eyes need a stable tear film to maintain comfort and clear vision.

The symptoms associated with torrhetssymtom can vary in intensity and may include a gritty or sandy sensation, burning, stinging, and redness. Discomfort may worsen with activities like reading, computer use, or exposure to windy or dry environments. Some individuals experience a feeling of something being in their eye, light sensitivity, or blurred vision that fluctuates. In some cases, the eyes may produce excess tears as a reflex response to the irritation.

The causes of torrhetssymtom are diverse. Age is a significant factor, as tear production tends to decrease with time. Environmental factors such as low humidity, air conditioning, heating, and exposure to smoke can exacerbate the condition. Medical conditions like Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders can also contribute. Certain medications, including antihistamines, decongestants, and some antidepressants, can reduce tear production. Hormonal changes, particularly in women due to menopause or pregnancy, are another contributing factor. Prolonged screen time can also lead to reduced blinking, which disrupts the tear film.

Diagnosis typically involves a review of symptoms and a physical examination of the eyes, which may include tests to measure tear production and assess the quality of the tear film. Treatment aims to alleviate symptoms and improve tear film stability. This can include artificial tears, lubricating ointments, prescription eye drops to reduce inflammation, and lifestyle adjustments such as using a humidifier or taking breaks from screens. In more severe cases, punctal plugs may be used to block tear drainage.
