Torkahtavat

Torkahtavat is an inflected Finnish verb form meaning that several people doze off or fall asleep briefly. It is the present tense, third-person plural form of torkahtaa, which describes a short, involuntary lapse into sleep, typically due to fatigue, sleep deprivation, or monotony. The term is common in everyday language and descriptive rather than technical.

In usage, torkahtavat can refer to groups or multiple individuals who momentarily drift into sleep. Examples include a class where students torkahtavat luennon puolivälissä, or workers who torkahtavat pitkin työvuoroa. Dozing off in ordinary situations is usually brief, lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes, and is often followed by renewed alertness.
