Tolmules

Tolmules are a small nocturnal mammal endemic to the Tolmere Archipelago in the fictional world of Tolara. They are placed in the family Tolmulidae within the order Rodentia. The genus Tolmulus is used in some regional accounts, and the name Tolmule derives from a local term for forest creatures combined with a familiar animal suffix.

Description

Adult tolmules measure about 16 to 22 cm in body length, with a tail of 18 to 28 cm and a weight range of 120 to 280 g. They have dense fur that varies from tawny to gray, with a lighter ventral side and a darker eye-ring formed by guard hairs. Tolmules possess strong hind limbs and a semi-prehensile tail that aids balance when moving through dense undergrowth. Their teeth are adapted for a frugivorous diet with some insect intake.

Habitat and behavior

Tolmules inhabit forest understories, mangroves, and scrub on most Tolmere islands, from sea level to about 900 meters. They are highly adaptable to disturbed habitats but rely on dense cover for shelter. They are largely nocturnal and live in small family groups, forming long-term monogamous bonds. They are proficient climbers and use vocalizations such as trills and squeaks to communicate within the group.

Diet and reproduction

The primary diet consists of native fruits, seeds, and buds, with opportunistic insect consumption. Breeding occurs year-round in warmer months, with litters typically containing 1–2 offspring. Gestation lasts around 30 to 35 days, and young become independent at about 6 to 8 weeks.

Conservation and culture

Tolmules contribute to seed dispersal for several island plant species and serve as prey for avian and reptilian predators. Threats include habitat loss from logging and development. Protected areas and habitat restoration programs are in place on some islands. In Tolrean folklore, tolmules symbolize endurance and communal care.
