Toistoohjelmistot, known in English as replication software, are computer programs designed to copy and synchronize data between different storage locations or systems. The primary goal of replication is to ensure data availability, facilitate disaster recovery, improve performance, and enable data distribution. There are various approaches to replication, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

One common type is synchronous replication, where data is written to both the source and the replica simultaneously. This guarantees that the data on the replica is always an exact copy of the source at the moment of the write operation, offering the highest level of data consistency. However, it can introduce latency as the write operation must wait for confirmation from both locations.

Asynchronous replication, on the other hand, writes data to the source first and then copies it to the replica with a slight delay. This minimizes latency for the source system, making it suitable for scenarios where near real-time replication is not strictly required. The trade-off is that there might be a small window of data loss in the event of a failure before the replication process completes.

Semi-synchronous replication offers a compromise, requiring acknowledgment from at least one replica before confirming a write operation to the source. This provides a balance between consistency and performance.

Replication software can be implemented at different levels, including block-level, file-level, or application-level. Block-level replication copies data at the storage block level, file-level replication works with individual files, and application-level replication understands the specific data structures of an application, often offering more granular control and efficiency for that particular application. These tools are crucial for modern IT infrastructure, supporting business continuity and enhancing data management strategies.
