Tobakkavgifter refer to taxes levied on tobacco products by governments. These taxes are primarily implemented to discourage tobacco consumption, thereby reducing associated health problems and healthcare costs. The revenue generated from these taxes can then be allocated to public health initiatives, education programs, or other government services.

The structure and rates of tobacco taxes vary significantly across countries and even within regions of a single country. Taxes can be applied as a specific amount per unit (e.g., per cigarette or per gram of tobacco), as a percentage of the retail price (ad valorem), or a combination of both. Economic studies have shown that tobacco taxes can be an effective tool in reducing smoking prevalence, particularly among young people and low-income populations, who tend to be more price-sensitive.
