It encompasses both linguistic practice and data design: in language, it involves adding precise time references; in information systems, it means tagging records with timestamps, durations, or temporal constraints to enable clear sequencing and planning.

In linguistic use, timespecifying helps resolve ambiguity about when an action occurs. This can involve explicit dates and times, time zones, or temporal qualifiers such as yesterday, next week, or at noon. In technical and data contexts, timespecifying ensures that events, logs, or processes carry machine-readable temporal markers, supporting synchronization, auditing, and time-based queries.
