Timelimits

Timelimits are constraints that restrict the amount of time available to complete a task or operation. They are used to enforce fairness, performance, and regulatory requirements, and can apply to individuals, processes, or systems. Timelimits may be expressed as a specific clock time, a duration, or a combination of both.

In computing and software, timelimits determine how long a program or operation may run. They can refer to wall-clock time (real elapsed time) or CPU time (processor time). Timeouts are common in network protocols and APIs to prevent operations from hanging indefinitely. In law, statutes of limitations set the period during which a legal action may be filed, after which claims may be barred.

Design and operational considerations include accurate estimation, monitoring, and graceful handling of timeouts, with user feedback and fallback strategies. Distinctions among deadlines, timeouts, and expiry help clarify expectations and enforcement across contexts.
