Tilbygget

Tilbygget is the common term for an extension added to an existing building to increase floor area or functionality. In Norwegian and other Nordic contexts, tilbygg can be single- or multi-storey and may be attached at the side, rear, or occasionally the front of the original structure.

Purpose and configurations: Tilbyggs are often used to create a larger kitchen, living room, extra bedroom, or a home office. Architects strive to ensure that the extension harmonizes with the existing building in terms of scale, materials and proportions, while allowing for functional improvements and daylight.

Design and construction: Tilbygget is typically built with materials that match or complement the main building, commonly timber frame or masonry, with a new foundation and structural integration. Energy efficiency and access to daylight are usually important considerations; many tilbygg employ large glazing or glass walls.

Regulatory framework: Construction of tilbygg usually requires planning permission or building permits, complying with local zoning, height limits, setback requirements, fire safety and energy codes. Procedures and criteria vary by country, region and municipality.
